Bullying is a huge problem and schools nowadays because people always have a reason to torment other people. Schools can do various things to prevent it such as bettering the discipline system, equipping teachers to better help victims and bettering the punishment so that bullies actually learn lessons and stop bullying someone.
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, The National Education Association, approximately 160,000 teens have skipped school because of bullying while National Center for Education Statistics says 42% per cent of students who reported being bullied at school indicated that the bullying was related to at least one of the following characteristics: physical appearance (30%), race (10%), gender (8%), disability (7%), ethnicity (7%), religion (5%), and sexual orientation (4%).
The effects of bullying include chronic headaches, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, suicidal/homicidal ideation, skipping school, a higher sensitivity to diseases like the cold and flu, and long-term physical ailments, like heart disease. Sometimes it leads to suicide and neurological problems. It is the concern of the hour to prevent bullying.
Administrative Awareness
It is the duty of teachers and school administrators to make sure that proper code of conduct is following, students are following rules and regulation. They must be aware of the problem which are faced by students. After all, if the school is not aware of the situation then they can’t implement any policies that may already be in place.
Open Conversation
The students feel more openness to those teachers who have open communication with their students. With open communication students can share their problem including bullying. To prevent further hesitation among student one on one meeting should be arranged by teacher or school so that the student can speak freely without being afraid of speaking in whole class.
Take Help of Counsellors
A school can appoint a counsellor to counsel students over the bad practice of bullying and how to counter it. The school counsellor serves the role of a mediator between the child and the bully. School counsellors are trained and licensed professionals who can help with some of the emotional issues involved in bullying both for the child being bullied and the child doing the bullying.
Rules and Regulation
Rules should be designed on the basis on child age that is when kids are younger, rules must be simple while when kids are older, rules must be designed as per their maturity level. The consequences for breaking the rules should be clearly stated so that the students know what will happen if they engage in a certain behaviour or go against the rules. This provides clear expectations.
Adhere Discipline
It is important that students of the school should adhere to discipline. Teachers play a major role in maintaining discipline in the school. Discipline comes from the teacher as for many student teachers are a role model. A teacher should approach people individually and help them to see the discipline as a solution to some of their problems.
Parent Engagement
Teachers should build rapport with the parents of their students. Keep them informed about their child’s grades, friends, behaviour, and even attitudes in school. This helps them to know about whether their child is a perpetrator of bullying behaviour or on the receiving end of bullying behaviour. Together parents and teachers can work in order to provide a consistent approach to introduce more productive and appropriate replacement behaviours. This makes the message more likely to sink in and stick with the child.
Strict Action
If found guilty of bullying mentally or physically. The school department should take strict action against the child so that he won’t do this again in the school or in any other place. Use of restriction from school should be taken at extreme end. Start by explaining the student the harmful effect of bullying. Even if he doesn’t stop, take action against him.
